Skatepark
In May 2002 Perranzabuloe Parish Council held a public consultation day in the Memorial Hall to seek residents’ views on the future development of Perranporth village and identify current problems. Under the heading “Leisure”, people commonly asked for the provision of more multipurpose, structural recreational facilities, with a “Sports Centre” and a “Skateboard Park” being the most common responses.
Between 2009 and 2012, a Parish Plan was researched and published with the involvement of the Parish Council entitled “Community Plan for the Parish of Perranzabuloe 2013 to 2018”. This further explored these themes, with significant responses being gathered from the public and summarised within the document. Young people were asked to give examples of the sorts of facilities they thought were lacking for people in the parish, and what they would like to see changed or improved.
The most popular answers were:
- Youth club/drop-in centre
- Skate park
- Sports centre
It was therefore agreed by the Parish Council to bring forward proposals for the building of a skate park in Perranporth, and the project is now complete!
Bolenna Park
Bolenna Park is a highly valued recreation space within Perranporth; a place for people of all ages to enjoy the great outdoors. It is used by the community and visitors to traverse between areas of the village, to sit and relax, exercise, sunbathe and for children and families to play together.
The park is owned and maintained by Perranzabuloe Parish Council and is managed by the Public Spaces Committee.
The open grassed area which is bounded by mature trees and bushes forms a traditional parkland space. There is also hard standing basketball court and goal posts on the grass as well as two small play areas for children of different ages. One of these has recently been completely replaced with new, colourful features and a swing designed for wheelchair users. Please note there is a code to access the wheelchair swing, please contact the office during working hours Monday to Thursday 9am – 5pm to obtain this information. This area has proved extremely popular with families particularly post-lockdown. New outdoor gym equipment has also been installed thanks to funding from the Gardens Charities.
A pathway links St Georges Hill to Perrancoombe. New surfacing was laid in 2021 to improve the facility for a small number of parking spaces. Perranporth Tennis Club is next to the park.
The ‘Friends of Bolenna Park’ group has been responsible for organising the recent improvements, and has plans for further enhancements including improving the paths, restoring or replacing the derelict building for community use and installing a wheeled sports track.
There is a tree planting programme in place in the park partly to replace some mature trees which have blown over in storms and also in line with the work of Perranzabuloe Action for Climate Emergency (PACE) which in turn is contributing to Cornwall Council’s Forest for Cornwall initiative and intentions for Cornwall to become carbon neutral by 2030.
In 2024, the Bolenna toilet was built, with an additional store room for the PPC grounds team. This has been a welcome addition to the park.
